One year ago Wednesday, women and men, young parents, elders, Clan Mothers and children walked onto the construction site of Douglas Creek Estates in Caledonia and reclaimed it from destruction, and the rest of the Haudenosaunee land Six Miles Deep on either side of the Grand River, the Haldimand Tract.
The year has been filled with highlights:
- Reclaiming and then retaking the land from the OPP of April 20 … UNARMED.
- The Federal government agreeing to negotiate with the HAUDENOSAUNEE CONFEDERACY government of Six Nations which it outlawed in 1924.
- KEEPING THE PEACE … Robert Jamieson talks about that, from the barricades in the immediate aftermath of the April 20th police raid:
When the women formed a line toward the police, the townsfolk; I caught a glimpse of “MY” version of reality,a dream..how women of all ages-girls, teens, middle aged and even our old-timers! stood tall, ready-with ever-present vicious resolve–to protect their offspring as females have done–throughout time. No more isolated incidents..this was a collective, fierce-determination..female power at it’s finest stating–Enough! and it was awesome! I am not ashamed. We all know that our children are something we’d give our lives to protect–thus like, it was close to that ‘one mind’ thing – the potential collective capability of that sort -must remain without interruption, unchallenged! Thank-you. I think you know where I’m going with that..
“You Men, you are all our boys, and we don’t want to see any of you getting hurt..please get back behind the barricades…”words of one of the Older women, her selflessness to stand before all the tension and the aching air.
And when the Women formed their line this time facing, us Men..well allow me to explain; it is to me…they just knew. They knew, or were sure of it hat we would not go charging through them- they quickly organized..’pick a man!’ …’find a man’!… urging one another..’where’s your man!’ it was like somehow they knew, we would listen. Any attempts to get by were halted with that maternal glare..or perhaps that deeper knowledge of bonds- somebody’s Mother, Sister, Cousin, Aunt, friend. Perhaps it was Women’s place amongst us or the respect they rate, or the teachings of the finalty of her decisions kinda like ’she’s the boss’ but not as oppressor-type..just because she provides that balance, she has the more humanizing nature, she brings life and for that alone we must take our direction from her. It was a glimpse–the remnants of an ancient culture.
Women, who stood straight, stern-like, sure of their place, and when they spoke..they spoke to be heard. On their other line-They knew our resolve, our fighting spirit, our readiness our own spirit of determination…and they knew; they were the only ones capable of stopping us.
THEY ARE RIGHT ABOUT THE LAND … AND THEY ARE STAYING ON THE LAND !!
