Profit is Not the Cure: Canada’s Health Care

July 27, 2007
Spread the word – Profit is not the cure!
Dear friend,

The Profit Is Not The Cure petition is growing every day, but we need more help. And we need it now.

In Quebec, Health Minister Philippe Couillard has tabled legislation that would allow private insurance to cover public health costs. This will open the floodgates to U.S. insurance companies who are just waiting for public health care’s weak protection under NAFTA to be dismantled. If Couillard’s law passes, Canada might not be able to stop the full-scale privatization of health care.

In British Columbia, Premier Gordon Campbell is letting private clinics charge sign-up fees and monthly memberships to see a doctor, in total contravention of the Canada Health Act. He’s also taking millions of dollars out of the public system to seek long-term contracts with more expensive for-profit clinics.

What does federal Health Minister Tony Clement have to say about all this? Absolutely nothing. He even cancelled a planned meeting with Premier Campbell to look into B.C.’s numerous unpunished Health Act violations. Meanwhile, Clement praises Quebec’s private insurance plan as a model for all of Canada.

By signing our petition, you are making it clear to people like Tony Clement, Gordon Campbell and Philippe Couillard that profit is not the cure.

But there’s more you can do.
