These are just a few of the informative articles from this weekend’s edition of the Information Clearing House (ICH) newsletter:

Conned Again
By Paul Craig Roberts
Obama’s selection of Rahm Israel Emanuel as White House chief of staff is a signal that change ended with Obama’s election. The only thing different about the new administration will be the faces.

Obama vs. Medvedev
Nuclear Smackdown in New Europe
By Mike Whitney
Most of what is written about Medvedev is nonsense. The same corporations that own the politicians own the media as well. Naturally, they want to demonize their rivals. In truth, most Americans would have a lot more in common with Medvedev than they would with Bush, Cheney or any of their “silver spoon” elitist cronies.

The machine grinds on relentlessly. Now it’s: give Obama a chance. This means: Public, go back to sleep. In the meantime Obama and the state machinery work at feverish pace.

I, too, have been having some misgivings about Emanuel, in particular pertaining to the neocon agenda in foreign policy and the economy. But after reading a couple of evaluations from people I more or less trust, I’m prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt [see here and here].

Emanuel may be the face of the new US/Israel dynamics. It is changing as far as I can tell, especially after watching some of the presentation at this site. Another interesting development on that front is the growing importance of J Street, which aims at countering AIPAC’s more nefarious influence in US politics & by extension on the world scene.

Gene, thanks for those links. I’ve just finished reading them as well as the comments on TPM. Very interesting and enlightening — and also hopeful, if J Street actually is what it purports to be and eventually manages to counter AIPAC’s pervasive, insidious influence. AIPAC has been subverting the US democratic process for a very long time, with tentacles in ours as well.

I now see what you mean about Emanuel and the changing US/Israel dynamics. Consequently, I am a bit more ‘cautiously optimistic’ about justice for the Palestinians in the foreseeable future… ?

There are a large number of ‘refuseniks’ in Israel: soldiers who refuse to keep fighting their Palestinian neighbours, soldiers of conscience. The CBC has had a couple good programs about them. There are also groups that work together, Jews and Palestinians, who denounce violence and joined to help each other toward peaceful solutions. They are sick of the violence and want to change the culture.. And it is heartening to see that the anti-hawk/neocon movement is getting stronger there as well. We just don’t hear about it much on the corporate media and the Americans hear even less.

I’ve added TPM to my links and will be reading regularly.

    Much appreciated.
