Time for cooler heads to prevail

Editorial – The U.S. made a pair of border decisions this week that make excellent sense, and one could be a sign Fortress America is letting cooler heads prevail.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, giving into pressure from both the Canadian government and the U.S. Congress, announced it wouldn’t require people crossing into the U.S. from Canada – including U.S. citizens – to have a passport, at least for a year.

This is an abrupt change in plans, as head of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff, for months had said the passport requirement would go into effect as early as January 2008. The earliest the department will require passports would be the summer of 2008.
