Canadian Hawks, CADSI

July 9, 2007

I received this disturbing info from fellow Department of Peace worker Rob Acheson, who heads the Toronto Chapter. It is essential reading for all Canadians who would like to see our country as a peace-keeping nation:

I ran across an interesting but disturbing article. Some of you are probably already aware of it as it ran in NOW Magazine in February of this year. The headline is ‘Hawks Get Bucks to Sell War’ and talks about funding the DND gives to universities who support a war agenda. One fellow, Jack Granatstein, a York U professor emeritus and board member of the Canadian Defense and Foreign Affairs Institute, is actually is working on a new lobby organization, Canadians for Defence and Security, aimed specifically at countering peace advocates.

Another enlightening website I came across is the Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries (CADSI), a not-for-profit national business association that represents the Canadian defence and security industries. Formerly the Canadian Defence Industries Association, CADSI represents 500 member companies selling to the defence and public security markets. The industries employ over 70,000 Canadians and generate $7 billion in annual revenues, roughly 50% of which comes from international sales. CADSI member companies are of all sizes and offer a wide spectrum of goods and services to its customers, and to business partners in Canada, the United States, and internationally. In browsing their online articles they are essentially a lobby group to encourage spending on war.

We need to work vehemently to counteract these destructive foes of peace.
